ABOUT SHANE KOYCZAN:

Shane Koyczan is an internationally renowned spoken word artist. He has emerged as a creator of poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice. In 2013 he collaborated with animators to make the anti bullying viral video To This Daywhich has now had over 18 million views. He performed a customised version For The Bullied and the Beautiful to acclaim at the 2013 International Ted Conference in California.

His first published collection of poetry, Visiting Hours was the only work of poetry selected by both the Guardian and The Globe and Mail for the Best Books of the Year lists in 2005. He followed up this success with Stickboy a novel in verse that chronicles the dark and lonely journey of a bullied child gripped by helpless rage. Koyczan shines a light into the bleak world behind some of the most incomprehensible acts in our culture, and also shows the healing power of love. Destined to become a classic, it was written for anyone who has ever been a child,Stickboy continues to be hailed by teachers, academics and mental health experts alike for its deft handling of the subject of bullying.

In 2014 Shane released Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To, his first graphic novel. Shane once again covered many beautiful and thought provoking pieces relevant to our time. Troll, a poem about cyber bullying and the challenges of managing and understanding this new breed of abuse by critically examining the deep and hurtful wounds of participating in this digital generation. Silence Is A Song graphic novel is accompanied by a collection of songs of the poems featured in the novel, an astonishing musical collaboration with Cayne McKenzie of We Are The City and Hannah Epperson.

Shane however, is best known for his award winning spoken word performances. With his rhythmic verse in high gear, he navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Stockholm and LA to name a few. He has received five star reviews for his performances around the world. Koyczan is truly an extraordinary talent that has blown the dust off the traditional designation of “Poet”.
Shane Koyczantag:www.shanekoyczan.com,2005:Post/49134252016-02-18T09:00:00-05:002017-10-31T14:24:14-04:00AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2016

After recently returning from a sold out coast to coast Canadian tour in support of his album and graphic novel Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To, Shane Koyczan has now teamed up with his band The Short Story Long for the project’s highly anticipated third full-length release, Debris. Recorded and engineered by Corwin Fox and mastered by Brock McFarlane, the title track features vocals from Ani DiFranco. To celebrate, Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long has shared the Ben Clarkson-directed video for album track “For Many” today.

“The piece, For Many, is a special one for me. It wouldn’t exist had I not gotten a letter from an 8 year old boy in Vermont. Thanks for reaching out, young sir. Over the course of my life I’ve seen that we attach ourselves to standards. That in itself is not a bad thing… standards are important. They’re part of how we learn to elevate ourselves above ideas that we’ve outgrown. The problem is that those same standards can become anchors… they can be what holds us back from evolving further. So we must be constantly resetting our standards so we can pull ourselves forward and help ourselves move away from concepts that no longer serve us. Beauty has always been a strange standard… how can we make uniform something that everyone has their own opinion of? The danger in allowing beauty to continue being a standard is that it then becomes the way we assign value to people. I wrote this piece as a way to speak to that.”

WATCH AND SHARE THE VIDEO “FOR MANY” HERE

Of the album itself Shane has this to say “You aren’t meant to be indestructible. You’re meant to build a better self, using what you can salvage from every time you’ve been destroyed. This album is an exploration of that sentiment… right down to the use of the semi colon in the album artwork.”

Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long originally came together to play one show in 2006 but after the positive response from their first show they decided to play another. And another. And another. This soon lead to a debut EP, The Crickets Have Arthritis (2006) and a debut LP, A Pretty Decent Cape In My Closet (2008). In 2011 the band released their breakthrough album Remembrance Year which featured “To This Day”, the video for which went viral with over 16 million views on Youtube to date and inspired Shane Koyczan’s 2013 TED talk.

Short Story Long is Maiya Robbie (guitar, vocals), Glenna Garramone (keyboard, vocals), Jordie Robinson (cello, vocals) and Jesse Lee (upright bass, vocals).
“As a kid I was a terrible Catholic… as an adult I’m an okay atheist. I’ve seen religion do good. I’ve known people who were able to turn their entire lives around because they found God. That just hasn’t been my experience. I think, in this life, we search for what gives us comfort. For some people it’s a concept like Heaven, for others it’s something different. I make no claims that what I believe is the truth… it’s simply what I believe. I’m grateful that I was able to find some small measure of harmony with my granddad despite our conflicting spiritual paths… I guess that’s how I’ve learned to define respect.”

Innovative murals and provocative posters confront the issue of bullying, in preparation forThe World Premier production of STICKBOY

A revolutionary new opera
Composed by Neil Weisensel • Libretto by Shane Koyczan

Vancouver, BC ~ Four of Vancouver’s most prominent mural artists are provoking thought and discussion on the issues of bullying with powerful outdoor paintings on construction hoardings and exterior walls of buildings in Vancouver. The murals are part of an awareness campaign leading up to Vancouver Opera’s world-premiere production of Stickboy, a revolutionary new opera composed by Neil Weisensel with libretto by world-renowned spoken-word artist Shane Koyczan.

VO, in collaboration with marketing communications agency DDB Canada Vancouver, has commissioned Nick Gregson, Carson Ting, Ben Tour and Ola Volo to create the murals on construction hoardings on the Downtown Eastside and the Cambie corridor, and on the exterior walls of two eastside buildings. The four artists were invited to respond to the story of the opera, and were asked to interpret the “monster” that lives inside the opera’s central character, a young and sensitive boy who reacts violently to repeated acts of bullying over a prolonged period of time.

Work begins Thursday October 9, 2014 on three of the four murals. The mural by Ben Tour has been completed. They can be viewed while in progress and after completion until the end of the run of Stickboy on November 7, 2014, at:

Provocative Posters
The awareness campaign developed with DDB Canada Vancouver also includes series of provocative posters located in three Canada Line stations, which use confrontational statements to inspire reflection and empathy for those who are bullied, as well as to build awareness of the world-premiere production of Stickboy.

The posters at Vancouver City Centre, Yaletown/Roundhouse and Broadway/City Hall confront passersby with aggressive statements that amount to bullying. Each statement is followed by a tagline telling the reader that they have just been bullied for 30 seconds; imagine what it feels like to be bullied for years.

“The issues of bullying, and more broadly of how we treat those who are ‘different’ from us, are profoundly important to our community and to the world,” says James W. Wright, Vancouver Opera’s General Director. “We believe that the mural artists, and others who contribute their work online, will bring additional depth and a variety of voices to the discussion of the issues that the opera so eloquently raises.” Added Wright, “We hope that the posters, too, provoke reflection and discussion, for they are meant to illustrate, with force and immediacy, that bullying occurs everywhere and touches everyone.”

By Francois Marchand, Vancouver Sun September 26, 2014

B.C. poet Shane Koyczan is at the heart of a Category Five creative hurricane.

Not only is he putting the finishing touches to the libretto for Stickboy, the Vancouver Opera production based on his 2008 book of the same name, but Koyczan has also just released his latest album and companion book of poetry entitled Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To.

You may have seen the latest video stemming from the collection, Troll, in which Koyczan addresses online bullying and anonymous commenters who get their kicks in berating and belittling others on the Internet.

The video followed in the footsteps of his viral anti-bullying video To This Day, which has gathered over 14 million views on YouTube and generated a tidal wave of discussion last year.

As Koyczan explained, no one is safe from online troublemakers, and even a positive statement like To This Day got “trolled” on YouTube.

“Anything is going to get trolled — it doesn’t matter what it is,” Koyczan said via phone while on his way to shoot another video, this one an homage to his deceased grandfather entitled Heaven Or Whatever, in a Maple Ridge cemetery earlier this week.

“There’s always somebody trying to step on something beautiful or trying to piss people off. Part of it is that people want attention. And whether that’s good attention or bad attention is sometimes beside the point. Some of it borders of sociopathic behaviour. It’s an interesting phenomenon.

“The more I researched troll culture, the more I realized, ‘Here are these people who live in these little comment boxes. Why not turn my video into a comment about what they’re doing?’ Look at what happened to Amanda Todd’s family after she passed away. Or what people did to Zelda Williams after her father (actor Robin Williams) died, sending her photos of her dead father. That’s insane behaviour. If you look at the comments for Troll, you can see people defending that behaviour. There’s been a long-standing culture of silence and victim-blaming.”

Bullying, depression and self-affirmation are still front and centre in Koyczan’s work.

Recorded with Cayne McKenzie (We Are The City) and Hannah Epperson and mixed by Aidan Knight, Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To is the latest chapter in the story of internationally acclaimed artist Shane Koyczan. It is available today along with the companion piece graphic novel of the same name.

Also out today is the video for album track “Troll”, featuring the artwork of Gareth Gaudin who also illustrated the graphic novel. “Troll” is dedicated to all of those who have lost friends or family through online abuse.

“It’s sad to think that we live in a world where so many are careless with their words, or still do not realize that the things they say have weight. Hiding behind invented identities doesn’t free anyone to behave inhumanly… any more than wearing a mask grants someone the right to impose physical abuse on another. I’ve received thousands of letters asking me to address this issue, and have been very reluctant to speak up because I didn’t want to draw the attention to myself. I then remembered being in school, and the pattern of silence that gave others quiet permission to continue torturing myself and others. We live in a society that asks us to keep quiet… to allow the world to spin unimpeded. Our silence is a commercial for a peace that will never be achieved unless we do speak up… unless we stand in the way of fear and hate showing others that there is a path that leads away from tyranny. We choose who we allow into our lives… we can choose who to evict.”

Shane Koyczan is also pleased to announce 2015 tour dates commencing March 21. They will include performances in Victoria, Vancouver, Nelson, Edmonton,Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, London, Waterloo, Montreal, Halifax and more. In the meantime the BC based artist will be a guest on David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour in October.

Shane then returns to home for a very special art exhibit Stickboy at Ayden Gallery on October 17, which runs to November 9, 2014. This exhibition will showcase 50 visual artists responding to the theme of bullying explored in Shane’s novel Stickboy. This event kicks off Vancouver Opera’s production of Stickboy by composer Neil Weisensel and with Shane as Librettist. This visually stunning world premiere is an adaptation of Stickboy which will feature visuals designed and animated by Giant Ant.The Opera premieres at the Vancouver Playhouse on Oct 23 – Nov 7th.

In 2013, Shane Koyczan collaborated with Giant Ant studios and more than 80 animators to create the anti-bullying viral video success To This Day, which has had more than 13 million YouTube views. He performed a customized version of To This Day“For the Bullied and the Beautiful” at the 2013 International TED Conference in Long Beach, California and now this extraordinary work has been adapted into an equally moving and visually arresting book. Thirty international artists, as diverse as they are talented, have been inspired to create exceptional art to accompany To This Day. Each page is a vibrant collage of images, colors and words that will resonate powerfully with anyone who has experienced bullying themselves, whether as a victim, observer, or participant.

Born of Shane’s own experiences of being bullied as a child, To This Day expresses the profound and lasting effect of bullying on an individual, while affirming the strength and inner resources that allow people to move beyond the experience. A heartfelt preface and afterword, along with resources for kids affected by bullying, make this book an invaluable centerpiece of the anti-bullying movement. To This Day comes out on September 30.

The BC Civil Liberties Association was established in 1962 and is the oldest and most active civil liberties group in Canada. They are funded by the Law Foundation of B.C. and by citizens who believe in them.

Their mandate is to preserve, defend, maintain and extend civil liberties and human rights in Canada. They achieve their mandate through our Advocacy in Action, Public Policy, Community Education, and Justice programs.
The BCCLA is an autonomous, non-partisan charitable society. Though they strive to work cooperatively with other groups on common causes, they are unaffiliated with any other organization or political group. Their independence has been one of the BCCLA’s enduring strengths for over 50 years.

About the iPad App

Moving Tales, the producers of innovative poetic 3D animated story apps and enhanced Ebooks, including the world-wide bestselling ‘The Pedlar Lady of Gushing Cross’, have released their newest iPad app, a collaboratively animated spoken word poem by Shane Koyczan.

The To This Day iPad App is based on a powerful anti-bullying themed spoken word poem, written and performed by Shane Koyczan, and animated by dozens of different animators. Every viewing and experience of the poem in this free app is unique thanks to randomly selected animated clip variations for most of the poem’s stanzas. Other features include the option to record your own version of the poem to be played with the animation, share your favorite stanzas with your friends via Facebook, Twitter and Email, enjoy the text in English, Spanish and French, link directly to the ToThisDay project web site from within the app, and much more.

“My experiences with violence in schools still echo throughout my life but standing to face the problem has helped me in immeasurable ways.” says poet Shane Koyczan. “I wrote To This Day, a spoken word poem, to further explore the profound and lasting impact that bullying can have on an individual. Schools and families are in desperate need of proper tools to confront this problem. We can give them a starting point… A message that will have a far reaching and long lasting effect in confronting bullying.”

“Vancouver’s Giant Ant produced the To This Day Project. There is a great collective spirit behind the project. Many people collaborated on the animation for the video, which forms the basis for this App.” says Talbot-Kelly. “We are especially excited to be able to include so many additional animated sequences in the app as compared to the video version, as well as French and Spanish translations. We hope young people and old can take heart from the poems important message.”

There have been a lot of requests to have To This Day translated into different languages. We have heard your pleas and have put together a story book type app that has the poem translated into both French and Spanish. We’re hoping to do more languages but it’s a costly process. No cost to you though… the app is absolutely FREE!!! I only ask that you check out some of the other incredible work that Moving Tales has put forward… really cool stuff and I hope to develop more with them down the road.

They wanted to work on a project with Shane and thanks to the support from their community they were able to put together this video. In a separate video, Shane discusses the making of this project.
