A Mini Anthology [potm]

Spoken Word

I get a tremendous amount of support from teachers and it has been invaluable. I’m often dismayed at how the resources for educators continue to dwindle… particularly in the arts…so in the spirit of giving I thought I would offer this gift.

A lot of people ask me about the poets I read and enjoy so I wanted to put together a few recitations of pieces I love. These tracks are completely free to download. I think for poetry to grow it needs to be shared, and I’ve been very fortunate in that regard. I wanted to share the writers who inspire and influence me in the hopes that students will seek out their work as well. I want to help teachers to inform their students that their are a great many voices out there and while not all of them will speak to you… some of them will… and when they do they will become great sources of comfort, guidance, and inspiration. I don’t own any of the rights to any of these poems so I encourage you to seek out the authors and support their work. Granted not all of these authors are alive, but that in no way diminishes their message. This mini anthology is meant as a tool for educators… the pieces can be used in lessons ie Mirror by Sylvia Plath… a great piece that can educate about perspective and personification. Ask students to write about themselves from the perspective of something else. Of course this offering isn’t exclusively for teachers… it’s for any fan of poetry who might be interested in discovering different voices.

Here’s the list of poems and their authors:

Mirror by Sylvia Plath
As I Walked Out One Evening by WH Auden
Did I Miss Anything by Tom Wayman
Fortune by Evelyn Lau
The Summer Of Black Widows by Sherman Alexie
Preface To A Twenty Volume Suicide Note by Amiri Baraka
Speech To The Young Speech To The Progress Toward by Gwendolyn Brooks
Any System by Leonard Cohen
We Alone by Alice Walker
The Arbor by Sappho

My hope in sharing these works is that they will spark interest in the listener. I’ve benefited greatly from having poetry in my life, and these are just a few of the voices I’ve returned to over the years. Any author, publisher, or estate who holds claim to the poems may ask for them to be removed and deleted at anytime. I claim no ownership and these recordings were made at my own expense with no intention to profit. Below are links to each of the authors books that contain the works. A good starting point for anyone looking to grow a poetry library.
